Case Study — Pre-Travel Check

A travel watch with a crown that felt looser than it should

Situation

Owner noticed the crown on a mid-1970s Swiss automatic felt slightly loose when pushing in. Planning a five-week overland trip through Southeast Asia. Concerned about dust and moisture ingress during travel.

What Was Done

Crown tube inspected under magnification. Thread engagement was intact but the crown gasket had flattened. New gasket seated, crown torque checked. Timing trace run; rate recorded within acceptable range. Exterior cleaned.

Outcome

Owner left with a note confirming the crown was serviceable for travel and a recommendation to have the case properly pressure-tested within six months. Appointment took 55 minutes.

"I had come in thinking the crown might be a serious problem. It turned out to be a gasket. Simple enough when someone who knows what to look for checks it properly."

Case Study — Vintage Movement Assessment

An unsigned pocket watch conversion with uncertain history

Situation

Owner had purchased a wristwatch conversion at a market in Bangkok. The case was clearly non-original but the movement looked old. No maker markings visible on the dial. Owner wanted to know whether the movement was worth keeping in working condition.

What Was Done

Case opened carefully. Movement identified through hallmarks as a Swiss lever cylinder from the 1890s, converted to wrist size at some point in the early twentieth century. Non-original parts noted: crown, stem, and caseback. Movement running but rate erratic.

Outcome

Written summary produced with three options: leave running as-is, full service with known limitations, or preservation without running. Owner chose preservation. Assessment took 1.75 hours; document handed over at collection.

Case Study — Heritage Bracelet Re-Link

A 1960s jubilee bracelet with three links beyond standard repair

Situation

The bracelet had stretched significantly at the lug end. Three inner links had metal fatigue visible under magnification. Pins throughout were worn. Clasp mechanism was functional but inconsistent. Owner wore the watch daily and wanted it back to that use.

What Was Done

Full disassembly. Three damaged links replaced with donor links from a reference piece of matching period and reference. All pins replaced throughout. Ultrasonic clean of each component before reassembly. Clasp spring tension adjusted.

Outcome

Bracelet returned to comfortable daily wear. Owner approved donor link sourcing before work began. Total work time: one full day. Donor links visible only under magnification; overall character of the bracelet unchanged.
